Additional Research

Products from the neem tree have been used for medicinal purposes for centuries. Today scientific research validates the traditional uses of Neem in both the maintenance of general health and skin care. In addition, it has been used historically to treat bacterial, fungal, and viral infections, and to boost the immune system. Widely available in India, Neem products till recently were virtually absent from the American market, where the scientific validation gives them an edge over many less proven products. Another big plus for neem products is their environmental friendliness; the tree grows on marginal soils, and every part of it can be used.Anecdotal reports of neem date back to the Middle Ages. Accounts of its successful use in treating skin lesions and a variety of ailments come from around the world. On the Indian sub-continent researchers have found more than 60 medicinal uses. Today, modern science validates many of these traditional uses for a variety of health problems. Research on the therapeutic benefits of neem continues unabated all over the world. Refer to the following bibliographyfor further information about the many properties of neem and its ongoing research.

Clinical studies of Neem :

Few clinical studies with very promising results are listed below:

The gum from bark of Neem is a stimulant and demulcent tonic. It possesses anti-leprosy, antispirochaetal and immenagogue properties (Nadkrani, 1954; Dastar, 1970; satyavathi et al., 1976; Subramanian, 1986).
Neem oil inhibits the growth of all the three strains of Mycobacterium tuberculosis and M. pyrogens var. aureus (Chopra et al., 1956).
The water extract (10 per cent) of leaves shows antiviral activity (Rao et al., 1969).
Nimbidin from Neem oil is effective in various skin diseases (Satyavathi et al., 1976).
Neem products are used for treatment of a whole gamut of diseases, including skin infection, cardiovascular disorder, diabetes and cancer. It has important fungicidal and anti-malarial properties. (Govindachari, 1992).

Modern pharmacology of Neem :
Chloroform extract of A.indica displayed significant inhibition of pathogenic microorganisms and effective healing of infected wounds (Thaker et al., 1986).
The leaf extract of A.indica was found to markedly blocked aflatoxin biosynthesis (98 per cent) and also inhibited the growth of Aspergillus parasiticus to some extent (60 to 70 per cent) that proves anti-bacterial property of A.indica.
The aqueous extract of A.indica inhibits the generation of chemiluminescene by activated human poly - morphonuclear leucocytes. This mechanism shown primarily by the phenolic compounds of A.indica may account for a major part of the anti-inflammatory activity of the drug that has been confirmed in the experimental models (Van der Nat et al., 1991).
