Historical or traditional use:

In the ancient Ayurvedic medical texts of India, the gummy exudate from Boswellia (the Latin name is Boswellia Serrata) is grouped with other gum resins and referred to collectively as guggals. Historically, the Guggals were recommended for a variety of conditions including Arthritis, diarrhea, dysentery, pulmonary disease, and ringworm.

The gum oleoresin consists of essential oils, gum, and terpenoids. The terpenoid portion contains the Boswellic acids that have been shown to be the active constituents in Boswellia (Boswellia Serrata). Today; extracts are typically standardized to contain 37.5-65% Boswellic acids.

Studies have shown that the Boswellic acids have an anti-inflammatory action-much like the conventional non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) used by many for inflammatory conditions. Boswellia inhibits pro-inflammatory mediators in the body, such as leukotrienes.2 As opposed to NSAIDs; long-term use of Boswellia (Boswellia Serrata) does not lead to irritation or ulceration of the stomach.

How much should I take? The standardized extract of the gum oleoresin of Boswellia is recommended. For rheumatoid arthritis or osteoarthritis, many people take 150 mg three times per day. As an example, if an extract contains 37.5% Boswellic acids, 400 mg of the extract should be taken three times per day.

Comments:

Boswellia is the premier Ayurvedic herb in helping the body combat a host of inflammatory conditions. The Sanskrit name is Salai Guggul. It is an Ayurvedic herb that contains anti-inflammatory triterpenoids called Boswellic acid. Boswellic acid and its derivatives have anti-carcinogenic, anti-tumor, and anti-hyperlipidemic activities. Boswellic acids are effective anti-inflammatory and anti-arthritic agents, for osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis, soft tissue rheumatism, and low back pain. Boswellia helps ease osteoarthritis and rheumatoid problems. It has been shown to lessen morning stiffness and increase joint mobility. Boswellia Serrata's anti-inflammatory properties can help to reduce aching and stiffness, especially when associated with low back pain. Boswellia is also known to help control certain inflammatory bowel diseases. It appears to reduce the inflammation associated with ulcerative colitis and Crohn's disease, both painful intestinal disorders. It works very well yet avoids all of the irritation associated with many conventional pain relievers. Boswellia is believed to suppress the proliferating tissue found in the inflamed areas and also prevents the breakdown of connective tissue. The mechanism is similar to the action of non-steroidal groups of anti-arthritic drugs with no side effects, gastric irritation and ulcerogenic activity. Many studies conducted have confirmed that Boswellia Serrata has potent anti-inflammatory and anti-arthritic activity. Boswellia was found to improve blood supply to the joints and restore integrity of vessels weakened by spasm. Boswellia Serrata may also be useful for the treatment of rheumatoid arthritis with no side effects as those seen with traditional drugs of choice. Recent studies have shown that arthritic conditions often are accompanied by some form of a virus. It is often recommended to take Neem along with Boswellia or Joint Support to help cleanse the blood of any toxins. Many people suffering from arthritis have reported that taking Neem with an anti inflammatory herb such as Boswellia is a potent combination in fighting the daily aches and pains of arthritis. Neem is generally recommended to be taken over a course of two to three months. Neem is a very powerful and effective blood cleanser and detoxifier. We offer Boswellia as a single herb or in our Joint Support formula which contains Ashwagandha and Shilajit as well as other supportive herbs. Triphala is also helpful in the long- treatment of arthritic conditions. Triphala helps to keep the colon clean and healthy. According to Ayurveda many kinds of disease originates in the colon because of a build up of toxin known as "ama". These toxins move from the colon into the blood stream and then into the joints, which is a contributing factor in arthritis. It is therefore critical to keep the colon healthy by eating properly, and exercise. Triphala is the premier combination of herbs to maintain a healthy colon.

Boswellia is similar to frankincense, which is mentioned in the Bible. This was one the gifts that the wise men brought to celebrate the birth of Christ. The frankincense which is referred to in the Bible is known as Boswellia carteri, which is similar, but has different properties than the Boswellia Serrata that is discussed here. Boswellia carter is an oil that is extracted from the gum resin of a tree native to Africa and the Middle East. The resin is now collected as China and then processed in Europe. Frankincense has been treasured for centuries by various cultures. It was used by many cultures to treat almost all known ailments

Arthritis

An imbalance in ones life can be the result of a variety of reasons. Stress, poor diet, inadequate exercise, emotional upheavals etc.. All of these can create an unbalanced physical and emotional state. According to Ayurveda this imbalance is the beginning of disease. We all have a particular mind and body type. In Ayurveda these are called doshas. There are three broad categories or doshas. They are known as Kapha, Pitta, and vatta. An imbalance will adversely impact our body's ability to properly digest food. This can cause a build up toxins or "ama'. These toxins travel from the colon thorough the blood stream and settle in various parts of the body, creating a variety of disease. One of the most common is the pain of Arthritis.

The best way to reverse this process is to remove the toxins from the joints and eliminate them from the body. This can only be done by keeping the colon in a healthy and clean condition.

Triphala is extremely effective in helping the body and specifically the colon to re-balance itself. Triphala is very gentle and safe and can be taken over a long period of time. Boswellia and Triphala can be taken together and will help to cleanse and heal the joints and other inflamed area of the body. Neem can be taken for a shorter period (up to three) months and will help to clean and detoxify the blood.

In addition to adding herbs to ones diet, one should be very careful to eat a health and balanced diet. Exercise is extremely important in rebalancing the body. Ayurveda also recommends the use of herbal massage oils to cool and sooth the inflamed joints and muscles. Some very effective oils for arthritic conditions include Maha Mash Oil, - Muscle and Joint Therapy (Vata Oil), and Sesame and Mustard Oils. These oils help to breaks up blockages and accelerate the healing process. In addition they can help to reverse the imbalance created by the aging process. Ayurveda suggest that massage oils be used on a daily basis. The oils can be applied directly to the affected area, or be used in a full body massage. The oils can also be added to the bath water.
